Rectal and ear (tympanic membrane) temperatures normally run about 0.5°F (0.3°C) to 1°F (0.6°C) higher than oral temperatures; armpit temperatures, however, are usually about 0.5°F (0.3°C) to 1°F (0.6°C) lower than oral temperatures. If your oral temperature is 99° (37.2°), your rectal or ear temperature may be about 100° (37.8°) and your armpit temperature about 98° (36.7°). When you tell your doctor about your temperature measurement, be sure to mention whether it was taken in the mouth, rectum, armpit, or ear.

Body temperature
Normal:

The average normal temperature is 98.6° (37°). But "normal" varies from person to person. Your temperature will also vary throughout the day, usually being lowest in the early morning and rising by 0.5°F (0.3°C) to 1°F (0.6°C) in the early evening. Your temperature may also rise by 1°F (0.6°C) or more if you exercise on a hot day. A woman's body temperature typically varies by 1°F (0.6°C) or more through her menstrual cycle, peaking around the time of ovulation.
Abnormal:

An oral temperature of 100° (37.8°) or a rectal or ear temperature of 101° (38.3°) indicates a slight fever.

A child has a fever when the rectal temperature is 100.4° (38°) or higher.

If your rectal or ear temperature is less than 97° (36.1°), you have an abnormally low body temperature (hypothermia). If your rectal or ear temperature is 95° (35°) or lower, call a health professional immediately.

When you have a fever, keeping a daily record of your temperature with multiple recordings helps you and your doctor determine what is causing the fever and how it can be treated. The pattern of a fever can help suggest the reason for the body's increased temperature.

In most healthy people, a fever does not in itself require treatment other than drinking plenty of fluids to replace losses from evaporation. Taking acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) or ibuprofen (such as Advil or Motrin) may help you feel more comfortable when you have a fever. Do not give aspirin to anyone under the age of 20 because it has been associated with a serious condition called Reye's syndrome.

In most instances, a fever can be considered a part of your body's natural defense against infection. However, in some circumstances you may need to call a health professional about a high fever.
